At Consultport, the Human Resources team shapes the company culture and supports talent development. They help every team member thrive in a fast-growing environment.
Rob joined Consultport as an HR intern in January 2024. Through dedication and impact, he transitioned to a full-time role. In this interview, he shares his journey, challenges, and the rewards of his Human resources role.
Can you tell us a bit about yourself and any key experiences that shaped your career journey?
Sure! So I’m originally from the United States and also got my bachelor’s in business from Indiana University (Go Hoosiers!). After graduating, I moved to Budapest, Hungary, to teach English. A bit of an odd career move, I know, but I do not regret the decision one bit.
I decided to do this because during my bachelor’s, I did an internship at a large corporation, which I really did not enjoy. It was very slow and stuffy, and I felt like I wasn’t contributing to the success of the company in any real way.
After teaching English for 3 years, I was ready to try my hand at the business world again, so I started my master’s in management at ESCP. During this time, I completed my internship at Consultport in HR and then joined full-time directly after the internship.
How did you first learn about Consultport, and what motivated you to join?
I first discovered Consultport on ESCP’s job platform. The company’s fresh and innovative approach to consulting immediately caught my attention. As an ESCP student, I was naturally interested in the topic. At first, I wanted to become a consultant. However, I soon realized it’s quite challenging if you don’t speak the local language.
Throughout the interview process, I became more and more excited about potentially joining. The role of talent acquisition seemed like a fun challenge, and I was promised that I would get hands-on experience very quickly, which was very important to me as a student with limited work experience.
What are your key responsibilities, and what does a typical day look like?
First, I am responsible for talent acquisition across all roles. This involves not only screening applications and resumes but also directly reaching out to potential candidates on LinkedIn and bringing them into the recruiting process. Beyond that, I am responsible for all onboarding and offboarding, planning team events, and our quarterly personal reviews.
Of course, A huge responsibility is the interviews as well, which takes up about 25% of my week, but I love this! It is super fun speaking with people from around the world and learning about their experiences.
How has your role evolved since you joined?
My role from intern to full-time has evolved, but not as much as you would expect. This is because interns really get so much responsibility and ownership early on, so the transition from intern to full-time was very smooth.
Broadly speaking, though, as an intern I was mainly responsible for recruiting all intern positions, but now as a full-time recruit both interns and full-time positions.
What are the most rewarding and challenging aspects of your work?
I’ll start with the most rewarding. I absolutely love and get a rush when a candidate signs a contract to start at Consultport. We have quite a selective recruitment process, so bringing someone in through A to Z is super satisfying.
In terms of challenging tasks. I’ve really needed to develop my time management and prioritization skills. Every day here is a new challenge, and it can be difficult to understand how to prioritize tasks, candidates, and other things that need to get done in an 8-hour day.
What do you enjoy most about working at Consultport?
Are there any unique aspects of the company culture that stand out to you?
It’s hard to boil it down to one thing, haha, but the number one highlight is how much I learn every day. At Consultport, you’re constantly encouraged to think outside the box and step out of your comfort zone. It’s challenging, but I’ve learned more here in two years than in six years of bachelor’s and master’s studies. From crafting the perfect reach-out message to conducting great interviews and managing people, I’ve gained countless opportunities and trust that I wouldn’t have found elsewhere.
Moreover, what really stands out is how international Consultport is, both in our team and our business. I collaborate with colleagues from Germany, Italy, France, Argentina, Vietnam, Ireland, and more. We also work with clients worldwide, from the United States to Japan and everywhere in between. Not many companies our size can truly say that.
What advice would you give to someone considering a similar role?
First, tailor your CV to the position you’re applying for. I used to think this wasn’t worth the effort, but after screening 10,000+ CVs and conducting 500+ interviews, I can tell you… It is. And don’t forget to show genuine excitement for the role or company!
Finally, make your story clear and easy to follow. Remember, the interviewer only knows what’s on your CV; it’s your job to connect the dots and present it coherently.
If you’re ready to take on challenges, work with an exceptional team, and shape the future of consulting, Consultport is the place for you!
